Victor’s Jaguar still felt good even after the head banging ride through the interior of Turkey. It took the new road in its stride and began to eat up the miles.

The weather was fine and we wanted to finish the day up against the low mountains that formed the barrier to our route into the next country.

We spent our last night in Turkey in the small frontier town of Dogubayazit; in a two story concrete block called the Kent Moteli. The town was little more than a collection of mud stucco houses, with a few wooden shops and some market stalls. Dogubayazit was home to a tank regiment of the Turkish Army and everywhere we encountered men in brown uniforms carrying old fashioned arms; American leftovers from World War 2: Thompson style sub machine guns and Colt .45 automatic pistols. These together with the tanks, and steel helmets, were just the innocuous tip of the iceberg which comprised a very extensive US military aid package. Just before it got dark, I lifted the bonnet on the Jaguar and topped up the oil. Remarkably little had been used over the last thousand miles. I flipped the lid off the distributor and checked the gap on the points, then took out a plug to examine the mixture and burn. The core was a mid-chocolate brown telling me that things were as they should be in the combustion chamber. It also told me that the fuel we were buying was of better quality than I had supposed.
